When we saw this former electric railway car barn originally built in 1907 in the heart of Richmond we decided to begin a journey to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places, register it as a proposed LEED platinum project, and find a way to make it a net zero energy commercial office that was both inspirational and fun.
We took what was arguably one of the least efficient buildings in Virginia and made it into one of the most efficient --- all in an enterprise zone that really needed some tender loving alternative energy. In April of 2011, the building received a LEED Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. We believe this is the first building in the U.S. that is LEED Platinum, listed on the National Register and net zero energy.
Our hope in providing a progressive path is that it becomes even more of a two-way street. Continued revitalization of our community is paramount because “there is no place like home”…
